Oya Er Wilkes
Candidate, Bishop's Stortford East
Originally from Turkey, Oya made Stortford her home in the last 20 years. She studied journalism (BA, Hons) in an attempt to address social injustices and improve society in general, and was a correspondent for a national newspaper in Turkey and editor in chief for large local newspaper in Germany.
Once in the UK, she focused on enhancing individuals' lives by studying psychology (BSc, Hons) and completing post graduate program (MA Social Work). She currently works in a north London local authority trying to improve young people's quality of life. She has attended lobbying activities at Westminster and consulted the Shadow Minister (Education) (Children and Families) Emma Lewell-Buck regarding Children and Social Work Act 2017.
Oya has an 11 year-old girl, who is starting secondary school in September 2021 at Hockerill Anglo-European College. They share their house with their beloved 2 year-old cat. Currently, she is busy trying to build a shed from eco-bricks in her garden, and improve her DIY skills. She likes skiing, engaging in philosophical conversations and attending her book club meetings. She volunteers for a local charity that supports rape and sexual victims/survivors.
Oya is a member of the Hertford & Stortford Constituency Labour Party executive committee, as well as the Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth Labour Party branch committee. She campaigned for Labour at the local elections previously. This is her first time standing as a candidate.
